Young autodidacts at Ballhaus Naunynstrasse
The media hype about dancing school kids who mature in the face of challenge has meanwhile faded. But this doesn’t mean that the feet have fallen asleep at the Berlin Dance in Schools program. Since 2009, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, for example, has adopted one of the 11 schools participating in the Berlin ZOOM patron program, enabling the 4th graders of the very engaged Nürtingen elementary school in Kreuzberg to enjoy dance theater projects. Following Canan Erek ("The Others” and "Class Trip”), Berlin dancer and choreographer Modjgan Hashemian has taken on the subject of computer games with the children. Of course computer games are no longer a low-mobility recreation in the era of PlayStation Move and Wii consoles. But dance still remains a step ahead of virtual reality in some respects: the choreographic rules are developed together, and no one can lose.
