"Balanchine | Forsythe | Siegal" at the Staatsballett Berlin
Works by George Balanchine and William Forsythe have been staged at Staatsballett Berlin before during the eras of Vladimir Malakhov and Nacho Duato. Thanks to Johannes Öhman and Sasha Waltz, pieces by the aforementioned veterans will now fill an evening with Richard Siegal. The choreographer seems tailor-made for the classical-contemporary line-up of the two directors: the busy American, who works in Munich and Cologne, is considered "bipolarly gifted" according to tanz magazine, since he is able to work at both classical ballet ensembles and the independent dance scene. In 2016, this multi-faceted talent founded his Ballet of Difference, a stylistically mixed, multinationally and -sexually oriented company that explores social norms. The choreography now developed by Siegal especially for the Staatsballett Berlin is called "Oval". Hear, hear: Ballet’s traditional circular forms have been reshaped by Balanchine and Forsythe before. If this doesn’t signify Siegal’s elevation into the rank of the all-time elite of ballet innovators. (cm)
