Heirs Of Knowledge
The Tanzcompagnie Rubato passes on "SOS” by Gerhard Bohner
Tanzcompagnie Rubato, alias Jutta Hell and Dieter Baumann, has been around since 1985. Whereas the duo was initially more involved in dance theater, the encounter with the dancer-choreographer Gerhard Bohner paved the way to abstraction in the early 1990s. Bohner‘s final choreography "SOS” was written in 1991 in close collaboration with Hell and Baumann, a year before his death: the two dancers perform a repetitive choreography in a narrow corridor in the immediate vicinity of the auditorium. In the slow tempo and in the rhythm of a live quoted text and a sparingly used music, a tense dance unfolds in which every little gesture gains in importance. The Rubatos performed this last duet of the great surveyor of dance more than seventy times and literally archived it in their bodies. This living dance knowledge is now passed on to the young Chinese dancer/choreographer couple, Niannian Zhou and Yuan Xi. Here‘s hoping that "personality and fictional character” may come together in an equally mathematically sophisticated way again.
