Open Calls

n.b.k./Uferstudios/Uferhallen: Open Call INDUSTRY X Oscar Peters

Application deadline: August 2, 2024

In cooperation with Uferstudios and Uferhallen e.V., n.b.k. also invites you to take part in an exhibition on Uferstudios' premises.

1. What is it about?
For several years now, n.b.k. has been supporting Uferhallen in their efforts to remain a production site for contemporary visual art in Berlin. Against the backdrop of virulent discussions about "Germany as an industrial location" and fears of impending deindustrialization, n.b.k. in 2024, together with Uferstudios and Uferhallen, addresses the site of the former Berlin tramway workshops as a testimony to Berlin's industrialization in the 19th and 20th centuries.

This is where the city's industry of today is! This is where the artists work to whom Berlin owes its reputation as an art metropolis and its location factor! Chimneys become brushes, control panels become choreographies!

With INDUSTRY, we want to tie in with a roller coaster built by showman Alex Gamerra in 1924 at Badstraße 8 on the former amusement mile — the so-called "Boulevard Badstraße" — whose rise is closely linked to Berlin's industrialization.

2. What will it look like?
From September 12–22, a wooden rollercoaster will be on display in the outdoor area of Uferstudios. Instead of cheering people, however, sculptural objects will become passengers in the rollercoaster cars. This is the brainchild of artist Oscar Peters, who is realizing such a project in Germany for the first time (you can find an example video here).

3. How can I participate?
Should your work be featured on a rollercoaster? Then send us an image or sketch of an artwork of yours by August 2 through the form linked.

It can be an existing work or a new design. The work must not weigh more than 10kg and must not exceed the dimensions of 70 x 70 x 70 cm. If your work becomes part of the exhibition, you will receive an artist's fee of 200€ (incl. VAT). If it is a new work, material costs of up to 100€ can be reimbursed after individual consultation.

4. How is the selection made?
A team consisting of the artist Oscar Peters, a representative of Uferstudios, a representative of Uferhallen e.V. and the curators Marius Babias and Arkadij Koscheew from n.b.k. are looking forward to reviewing your submissions. The main focus will be on the static stability of the work, its feasibility, and the absence of discriminatory depictions.

You will receive an acceptance or rejection by August 9. If you are accepted, you will be provided with a wooden board on which you fix your work. We ask you to bring this to Uferstudios by August 28 in individual consultation with the project team so that we can take a test ride on the roller coaster and you have the opportunity to correct any unexpected wobbles.

5. When will my artwork be on view?
Not all artworks can ride the rollercoaster at the same time. On September 6, we will let you know at what times your work will be a passenger on the rollercoaster. Each artwork will be on display for the same amount of time. During the opening, all works will be presented.

We look forward to your submissions and hope to see many artworks on the rollercoaster!
